Young Poets Poetry Contest!

Young Poets Poetry Contest!

Over the next two weeks, students will have the opportunity to take part in the Young Poets Poetry Contest!  If selected, your student’s poem will be published in the 2018 Young American Poetry Digest!  Although all poetry forms are encouraged, they are highlighting “haiku” poems.
Click {here} to download the project letter!

The judges will be looking for:
  •          Creativity
  •          Sensory/Figurative Language
  •          Structure
  • ·        Poetic techniques

We included optional educational resources below.  We will cover some of these in class but may not get to all of them due to time restrictions. You can support your student by talking to them about what they plan to write, helping them access the games below, or discussing some of the educational links.

Students will have time to write their poems in class on Thursday, March 8.  Students can also bring in other poems that they wrote at home, however, the contest limits each student to 80 words.

STAAR Wars Optional Practice

STAAR testing is nearing very quickly, and we are striving to do everything we can possibly do to help your child succeed. We have been sending links for all students to practice reading and writing skills through our snapshots and on blogs each week. Recently, we uploaded all of these links to one location for students to use at any time.

The new website location for these practice links called Portaportal (www.portaportal.com, guest access: kimberlin3rd).

This website has been specifically made for our third graders and has the many links to fun games, quizzes, and even some videos to help students practice skills we have been working on in class. As an effort to continue working on skills we have mastered, reinforcing skills that need extra attention, and keep all our skills on point, 3-5 new practice activities and/or passages over a certain skill will be posted in the Portaportal site, under the column “STAAR Wars.”

Your student will have until the following Friday to complete the activities, have them checked and signed by you, and turn them in. We will be tracking who fully completes these activities, has a parent signature, and turns them in on time. For each activity turned in, students will receive a sticker on their sticker chart. Once they have filled their sticker chart, they will receive a reward. These rewards will in no way be tied to grades. They are for incentive purposes only. These are not mandatory assignments but meant to help the students master and maintain skills needed and reward those who make the good choice to practice their skills.
