Snapshot for January 29

Here is this week's snapshot if you are unable to get the e-mails. You can download the pdf file by clicking beneath the snapshot picture. All snapshots will be available in pdf form on the "Weekly Snapshots" page {here} once they are sent out and posted!

Next week, our students will participate in MOCK or practice STAAR testing.  Students will take a MOCK Math STAAR on Monday and a MOCK Reading STAAR assessment on Tuesday.  Please encourage your student to do their best on these assessments and to take them seriously.  We will start first thing in the morning on Monday and Tuesday, so please try to be on time.  These practice tests will give us valuable information as we work to prepare our students to be successful on the real STAAR assessments.

Next week, we will read chapters 16-23 Tales of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.  Our reading skills will still be determining the main idea, making an inference, and drawing conclusions. Please see the links below for optional skills practice over these concepts.  In writing, students have been working on their Fractured Fairy Tale Project.  Next week, students will finish their rough drafts, take part in peer editing, and will start on their final copy.  Pleaseclick here to see the rubric. This writing project will be on-going over the next few weeks.

For homework, we will have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Monday, January 29.  Due to MOCK STAAR, we will not have spelling this week. Click here to see the spelling list for the week of January 29. The spelling homework and the quiz will be due on Friday, February 8. Spelling City Certificates can also be submitted by email to my email address.  We do not have a TimeForKids assignment for next week either.

Don't miss out on this FREE event!  GISD is hosting TechFest on Tuesday, January 30, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center. They will start serving FREE pizza at 5:30.  The campus with the most participating students at the elementary school level will receive two VEX Robots Kits! There will also be great door prizes.  A flyer went home advertising this event. I hope to see you there!  :)

Today we had a very special visitor!  Rowlett City Council Member, Matt Grubisich, took time out of his day to come and talk to us about local government.  We studied the branches of government and the levels of government, such as federal, state, and local governments, earlier this year.  With our City Brochure projects, we looked even more closely at our local communities and their governments.  We enjoyed our morning with Mr. Grubisich and want to thank him for taking the time to answer all of our questions! We have an exciting opportunity to be recognized by Rowlett’s City Council for all of our hard work during the City Brochure Project.  We have been invited to attend the session on February 6, 2018. Please click here for more information.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
