Thank you to everyone who came to the PTA Spirit Night at YogurtLand!  It was great to see so many of our students outside of school.

Next week, we will continue to read Back to School, Mallory by Laurie Friedman.  We have limited copies of this text so if students have their own copies of this book at home, they are welcome to bring them to school.  We will focus on character traits and will focus on the changes we see the characters in our book undergo.  We will also focus on the structure of a fictional text and on identifying the plot elements. There are optional practice links on below.

In writing, we will continue our personal narrative unit.  Students are taking their composition focusing on their first day of school through the writing process and will create final drafts next week. We will continue to focus on verb tenses in grammar, focusing on past, present, and future verbs.  There will be a graded assignment over verb tenses next week.  There are optional practice links on below.  In Social Studies, we will move to our Founding a Nation Unit as we continue to learn more about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and our Founding Fathers.

For homework, we will have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Tuesday, September 4.  We will also have our spelling homework and test due on Friday, September 14 over the prefix de- and dis- list.  We will continue to use the same spelling menu. All materials have been linked to the blog.

If anyone is available to donate their time on Tuesday, September 4, we would really appreciate it.  We need some help preparing and sorting new resources that we have received to use with our upcoming units and lessons.  We are so excited to have these materials but could really use help getting them student ready!  The 3rd Grade team will leave all materials in the Kimberlin Workroom Tuesday morning.  If you are available, please let us know.

Wow!  The first week of school flew by!  We had so much fun getting to know all of our amazing 3^rd Grade students.

This week, we will continue to read Back to School, Mallory by Laurie Friedman.  We have limited copies of this text so if students have their own copies of this book at home, they are welcome to bring them to school.  We will focus on character traits and will focus on the changes we see the characters in our book undergo.  We will also focus on the reading skill sequencing as we read our focus stories of the week Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman and The Great Pig Escape by Eileen Christelo.

In writing, we will continue our personal narrative unit.  Students will be creating their first composition of the year focusing on their first day of school! We will be looking at verb tenses in grammar, focusing on past, present, and future verbs.  In Social Studies, we will continue our Celebrate Freedom unit as we learn about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

For homework, we will have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Monday, August 27.  We will also have our spelling homework and test due on Thursday, August 30 over the compound words list.  All materials have been linked to the blog.

School Supply Lists!

2018-19 Supply Lists!

I can’t believe it is almost the end of July already.  I hope that everyone has been enjoying their summer so far! I have enjoyed time with my dog, Knightly, as well as spent time reading books with my new book club!  I know that several stores are starting to put out their Back to School items and some of you are wondering what will be needed for this upcoming school year! Below are the links for the 3rd and 4th Grade school supply lists for the 2018 - 2019 school year.

The 3rd Grade teachers would also love it if you are able to send a couple extra glue sticks and extra boxes of crayons to donate to our classroom supply bins. These are supplies we tend to run a little low on throughout the school year and desperately need! J

Ms. Molix made these wonderful supply checklists!  I hope that they are helpful as you do your back to school shopping!

Next week, we will continue and complete our new novel study and student-led literature circles over the novel Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.  In writing, we will work on cursive writing.  We will also finish our 3rd-grade memory writing, which we started this week and that will be due on or before June 5.  We will also review our 3rd-grade reading and writing skills with fun, end-of-year activities!

If your student has a yearbook, field day shirt, or any other item that they would like to have their classmates sign, please send it on Thursday, June 7.  Students will be given time in my classroom to have a signing celebration!  

We do not have any homework but please keep in mind that all assignments must be turned in on or before June 5. A zero will be placed in the gradebook for any assignment that has not been turned in by the end of the day on June 5^th.  Please make sure to check Skyward to ensure that your student is not missing any assignment.

iWrite Eco-Fiction Contest!

iWrite Eco-Fiction Contest!

Next week, students will have the opportunity to take part in the iWrite Literacy Contest!  Students will be given work time to create short stories and poems that incorporate the theme of Environmental Fiction or Eco-fiction.  Students can then submit their short story or poem online and enter the iWrite Literacy Contest.  iWrite will select 65 winners to publish in their annual anthology.  The winners will be invited to a book signing celebration in Houston, Texas.  To learn more about the contest, please visit https://iwrite.org/i-write-contest/

This is a great opportunity for our students to see their work professionally published.  The anthology will also be available at bookstores and online at Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com!  Being a published author at a young age is great for future resumes and applications!

We will review environmental issues such as pollution in class.  Students will also have brainstorming activities, editing opportunities, and will write their poems and short stories in class from May 21-29.  Students will have their Environmental Fiction or Eco-fiction short story due for a class composition grade at the end of class on Tuesday, May 29. Students will have their work returned on Tuesday, May 29.  Please see the attached grading rubric.  Students who would like to enter the contest will have to type their submissions and submit it at https://iwrite.org/i-write-contest/ by May 31.

We included other optional educational resources below.  We will cover some of these in class but may not get to all of them due to time restrictions. You can support your student by talking to them about what they plan to write, helping them access the games below, or discussing some of the articles.

Thank you to all of the parents who donated their time and supplies to make the STAAR Carnival such a fun experience for all of our students!  It was an amazing day and we could not have done it without you!

Next week, students take their STAAR Assessments on Monday (math) and Tuesday (reading).  Please encourage students to take their time, use their strategies, and to do their best on these assessments.  They may want to bring a jacket, a water bottle, and an extra snack.

With STAAR just around the corner, please take part in our STAAR Prep Incentive Resources. There are new resources available on BoomCards and ReadWorks.  Students know their log-in and there are directions at the end of the snapshot.  Please see the classroom blog for easy access to these resources.  Please see the optional practice links below and on portaportal.com. 

Next week, we will also start our new novel study and will break up into student-led literature circles.  We will start Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo on Wednesday.  Our goal is to cover chapters 1-8 by Friday, May 18. 

For homework, we will have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Wednesday, May 16.  We will NOT have spelling or a TFK assignment next week.  Please spend time completing one of our reading technology programs, such as Education Galaxy or I-Station, and completing the STAAR Prep Incentive Resources.

Students did a great job on their MAP End of Year Assessments last week!  Many of our students did not finish one or both of their assessments.  As soon as we know when our students will go back in to finish their assessments, we will let you know!
