STEAMposium Volunteer Drive

It is time for the 4th annual STEAMposium!

With new events such as the Bricks & MiniFigs Brick Derby and #FamilyFun Interactives, we will need more volunteers than ever before. Parents are invited to register to volunteer at this amazing event, by signing up in the STEAMposium Volunteer Drive.  The STEAMposium Volunteer Drive will end on Friday, April 13.  Students in middle and high school are also welcome and will receive service hours for volunteering. Volunteers will receive a shirt and an insulated cup on the day of the event.

At the end of STEAMposium Volunteer Drive, Kona Ice will visit the campus for the following rewards:

•         The elementary classroom with the most parent volunteers and at least one teacher volunteer will receive a bracelet for a regular ice for each student!
•    The winning campus will have a visit from the Kona Ice visit!

Reading at Home Technology Challenge!

I-Station Reading and Education Galaxy Reading have great lessons and activities for you to practice and improve your reading skills. Both programs have home access and use your school logins. As we prepare for our STAAR reading test, let’s see who can log the most time spent practicing reading skills at home! There will be prizes for the top technology times logged. Every Monday, students will have the opportunity to fill in a class chart to celebrate their accumulated practice time. The competition ends on May 7, 2017.

Only time spent on I-station Reading or Education Galaxy Reading will be counted towards this competition. J

Next week, we will complete “Book the Fourth” of Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.  Before Spring Break, a letter regarding the at-home Tale of Despereaux project went home.  Click here for a copy of the project letter.  The project is due on April 16, 2018.  In reading, we will continue to focus on the reading skill cause and effect.  We will also review persuasive text and will be reviewing elements of persuasive language.  Please see the optional practice links below.  The week of April 9, we will be reviewing nonfiction text features. If you have any child-friendly magazines or newspapers that you could donate to a scavenger hunt activity, please send them in.  We are also running dangerously low on glue sticks are would greatly appreciate any donations.

This week students will continue their unit on persuasive writing.  Please see the optional practice links below.  They will also have time to continue their Fractured Fairytale Project. In grammar, we will focus on prefixes, suffixes, and root words.  Please see below for practice links.  I highly encourage students to look at the ones on Flocabulary and Education Galaxy.  There will be a graded assignment over these skills on Wednesday, April 4 and a quiz on Friday, April 6.  Please click here to see the attached studyguide.

For homework, we will have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Monday, April 9.  The “Suffixes –ful, -less, -able, -ly”spelling homework and quiz will be due on Friday, April 6. The TFK quiz over “Famous Firsts” will also be on Friday, April 6.  The real magazine was sent home today and you can click here to see thedigital copy.

The TFK quiz over “Food for Thought” will also be on Thursday, March 29.  The real magazine will be sent home Monday, March 19, but the digital copy is attached.

Young Poets Poetry Contest!

Young Poets Poetry Contest!

Over the next two weeks, students will have the opportunity to take part in the Young Poets Poetry Contest!  If selected, your student’s poem will be published in the 2018 Young American Poetry Digest!  Although all poetry forms are encouraged, they are highlighting “haiku” poems.

The judges will be looking for:

•          Creativity
•          Sensory/Figurative Language
•          Structure
• ·        Poetic techniques

We included optional educational resources below.  We will cover some of these in class but may not get to all of them due to time restrictions. You can support your student by talking to them about what they plan to write, helping them access the games below, or discussing some of the educational links.

Students will have time to write their poems in class on Thursday, March 8.  Students can also bring in other poems that they wrote at home, however, the contest limits each student to 80 words.
