Snapshot for October 7

Thank you to everyone who signed up and donated to the PTA Fun Run!  It’s not too late to set up an account and to donate.  We will continue to take donations up until Friday, October 11.  There are 2 new incentives. The next two pass incentives will be “Popsicles on the Playground” and “Silly String War.”  The actual redemption date for these passes will be AFTER we finish gathering all donations.  We will keep you posted once the official date has been set.  Here’s the link for registration.

In class this week, we will complete our reading of the novel study over Back to School, Mallory by Laurie Friedman.  We will continue our study of informational texts.  We will focus on text structure and main/central idea.  Both of these skills can be very tricky and challenging for our 3rd graders.  To help them, I added new BoomCards and Padlet activities focused on these skill areas. Please see the bottom of the snapshot for information on how to access BoomCards and Padlet.

In writing, we will complete our study verb tenses in grammar this week and will then move on to studying commas usage when listing in a series.   We will also write a persuasive writing told through the eyes of a pumpkin trying to convince the reader not to select him.

For homework, we will have spelling homework and a quiz over the “Words with /j/, /k/, and /kw/” list on Friday, October 11. We will also have an upcoming reading log assignment.  Our next reading log assignment is due on Friday, October 11 for 100 minutes.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Snapshot for September 16

Today student went down to take their MAP Reading test.  I am so proud of the effort and strategies that I saw today.  Several students did not complete the test and will be going to finish it throughout the week.  We are also making great progress on our DRA assessments and are nearly done!  J

Due to MAP and DRA testing we are behind on our Back to School, Mallory novel study but will get back on track this week.  This week we will also study a story and a collection of poems focusing on figurative language and describing the author’s use of similes, metaphors, and hyperboles.  While looking at the story and the poems, we will discuss the structure and characteristics of these two different types of text.

In writing, we will continue our personal narrative unit.  We are writing short stories about one moment from our lives.  We wrap up our study of conjunctions and there will be a graded assignment on Tuesday, September 17.  We will also wrap up our study of common and proper nouns and there will be a graded assignment on Friday, September 20.

For homework, we will have spelling homework and a quiz over the “ Long I” list on Friday, September 20.   Our next reading log is due on Monday, September 23.

On Saturday, September 21, GISD is hosting the Literacy for Life Community Event from 10:30-3:00 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center.  THE CAMPUS WITH THE HIGHEST ATTENDANCE WILL BE AWARDED A CLASS SET OF CHROMEBOOKS AND A CHROMEBOOK CART!  Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite storybook character for the event.
To help us win the Chromebooks, we are offering the following:
·        Each student who attends will get a ticket to an ICE CREAM/DANCE PARTY.
·        The class with the most students in attendance win "MRS. SULLIVAN'S STORYTIME PARTY WITH COOKIES AND MILK!"

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

This week, we will continue to assess students on their oral reading and comprehension skills using our Developmental Reading Assessments (DRAs). We will start the beginning of the year MAP assessments.  In class this week, we will continue reading our first novel study over Back to School, Mallory by Laurie Friedman.  We will also continue to focus on character traits and will focus on the changes we see the characters in our book undergo.  Next week’s focused skill will be on identifying different types of point of view.

In writing, we will continue our personal narrative unit.  We are writing short stories about one moment from our lives.  We wrap up our study of conjunctions and will start our study on common and proper nouns.  There will be a graded assignment of the four types of questions on Friday, September 13.

For homework, we will have spelling homework and a quiz over the “Long O” list on Friday, September 13.
