Dear Parents,

Thank you for coming out and supporting our Living Wax Museum Night!  I really appreciate your time and support! Words cannot express how proud I was of all of our amazing students last night.  Every one of them was fantastic and have accomplished so much during the course of this two-month project. To learn about our upcoming “City Project”, please see the attached parent letter.  It contains information about the project, a timeline of due dates, and the grading rubrics.

Thank you to all of our parent chaperones who joined us on our Heard trip!  You made this trip so enjoyable and so much fun.  Please email me any field trip photos so that we can use them in our End of the Year slideshow.

Next week, students will begin their informational texts unit.  We will be focusing on “Dear Benjamin Banneker” by Andrea Davis Pinkney.  Our reading skill will be identifying the main idea within an informational test.  Students will also focus on different text features that are used in nonfiction texts. Students will have a quiz over nonfiction text features on November 30, 2017. A study sheet will go home before Thanksgiving break and there are study links below.

In writing, we continue to discuss simple and compound sentences. Please look at the link below to help students get a head start on this skills. There will be a graded assignment on these skills on November 16, 2017.  I strongly suggest practicing the Education Galaxy link below.

For homework, we have a “Marvelous Memories” Assignment for Grandparents’ Day.  We are asking students to interview a grandparent and a “grandfriend”.  The interview questions are attached.  “Marvelous Memories” will be due Thursday, November 16 in preparation for Grandparents’ Day.    Between our field trip and the Veteran’s Day Ceremony, this assignment did not make its way home in hardcopy form.  A hardcopy will be sent home on Monday. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

We will also have our 100 minutes of at home reading assignment due on Monday, November 20I attached the spelling list.  We took a week off of spelling due to the Living Wax Night and Heard Field Trip so the list is the same one that was sent last week. The spelling homework and the quiz will be due on Friday, November 17. Spelling City Certificates can also be submitted by email to my email address.

Back to School, Mallory!

Mallory Changes!
Our students loved getting to read the novel, "Back to School, Mallory" by Laurie B. Friedman.  While reading the novel, we focused on character traits, feelings, and the changes that characters undergo throughout the story. 

Students worked in cooperative groups to create a prewriting foldable. The foldable compared and contrasted the character traits and emotions that could be found at the beginning of the book and the character traits and emotions from the end of the book.  Students also had to provide events from the novel to use as text evidence. 



 

Students were able to use their prewriting foldable on their written responses where they told me about how Mallory changes over the course of the novel.  





This novel is one from the "Mallory" series.  There are many other "Mallory" books to enjoy that would be great for our RR goals!

The "Rabbit Rule" !

Spelling help for week 2!

We will be going over our spelling list and will have several activities planned to help students with this week’s spelling pattern.  This double consonant pattern can be a tricky one!  Here are a few resources to help you support your student’s mastery of this tricky pattern.
This week the spelling generalization is the “Rabbit Rule”!
I always tell students that this is more of a “generalization” than a rule.  There will always be those pesky “rule breakers” or expectations. This is a generalization that can be applied to most words but not all words. The “Rabbit Rule” is a spelling rule that explains why we double the consonant in words like “rabbit” or “kitten”.  This helps generalization can be seen in the double consonant in many common words, such as supper, muffin, letter, tennis, rubber, carrot, ladder, better, and traffic.
The Rabbit Generalization says, that the middle consonant is usually doubled in words that meet these three standards:
  • ·         Does the word have two syllables?
  • ·         Is the first vowel saying its short vowel sound?
  • ·         Is there one consonant sound between the two vowels?

"Our Teacher's Not a Zombie"

Our poem of the week was “Our Teacher’s Not a Zombie” by Kenn Nesbit.  Our students loved it and created amazing artistic representations using the poem’s sensory language! I cannot wait to see what they come up with next week!

New Year, New Blog!

Starting a blog has been an item on my professional goals list for some time now!  I am so excited that my wonderful team member, Ms. Molix, has given me the push that I needed to finally start one.  

I am starting this classroom blog to showcase all of the amazing things your students accomplish while at school and to help stay connected with all of my wonderful families. I will try to post at least twice a month.  I will link homework assignments, project documents or resources, helpful online learning games, and activities to enrichment your student's learning.
